1983 Suzuki RM500 D FOR SALE

1983 Suzuki RM 500 D

Two time national series AHRMA Ultima class winner

RM 500’s are super fast bikes, but if anyone can find a ‘weak link’ to one then possibly the stock KYB front forks would be it. They could definitely use a little help in stock form. This bike has had a very nice set of the KTM White Power inverted forks and front wheel (with DLS dual leading shoe brakes) installed. I’m not kidding guys, riding this bike with this front end on it makes you feel like your riding a motocrosser from the mid 90’s, not the mid 80’s. It’s that good, and it’s no wonder why this bike won the series championship two years in a row. It was kind of like cheating, but it isn’t (see below). As you may recall Brad lackey won the FIM 500cc world championship in ’82 on an RM500, but not even the KYB factory techs back then could make their forks work like the inverted forks (Simons) that Lackey ultimately won with.

The stock KYB Full-Floater rear suspension is excellent and had no issues straight from Suzuki.

I bought this bike from the original racer/owner several years ago, and since then this bike has had a complete overhaul and freshening with all newly: powdercoated frame, freshened motor and carb, freshened and rebuilt suspension, newer plastic, newer tires, wheel bearings, brakes, etc. etc. Answer aluminum fat bars work great. Dent free DG pipe & silencer painted silver and the bike runs like all RM500’s do–FAST! New vintage tank cover. New repro seat cover. New grips, controls, etc. Bike has been restored to ’84 RM blue/yellow “E” color scheme.

The White Power (WP) front end on this bike is one of only two kinds of inverted forks that AHRMA says is legal to run. In 1984 you could order a new KTM with either these WP forks, or their conventional Marzocchi units. You had a choice. This is why AHRMA states that these forks are legal.

The Simons UD-60 inverted forks are legal also, but those are really cost prohibitive and ultra rare. Prices for a decent set of those usually start at around $3000.00 and go up from there. These WP forks are a very cost effective substitution for the ultra trick Simons units.

BIKE HAS NO TITLE AND IS SOLD AS-IS. This is a show bike that is also race ready–your choice.
